Nothing Good Happens After Midnight

a Suspense Magazine Anthology

Nothing good happens after midnight is an apt phrase in life as well as a title for this compilation of short stories by Jeffery Deaver and others.  It is a book collection of various kinds of suspense stories that will at times make you think ‘Did I lock the doors and windows?’  The introduction to the book that was written by Jeffery Deaver where he stated his reasons for compiling this particular volume of stories that will make the reader keep reading this genre of literature.

Nothing Good Happens After Midnight is a collection of short stories by thirteen different authors.   The stories are tied together by the theme that nothing good happens after midnight.Anthology
The anthology starts with the short story ’12:01 AM’ which to me is a perfect story to start out an anthology entitled ‘Nothing Good Happens After Midnight’.  The stories range from murder, executions, cell phone and other types of intrusions even if the teenage variety.  My favorite stories of this anthology were and are ‘Midnight in the Garden of Death’ by Heather Graham; ‘All Aboard’ by Hank Phillippi Ryan; as well as ‘A Creative Defense’ by Jeffery Deaver.  The plot summaries of these three stories are in Heather Graham’s story- a group of teenagers decide to have a summer slumber party in a graveyard well not listening to the adults in their lives.  Ryan’s story is about a women who listens to a conversation and cannot believe what she hears- what should she do?  In Deaver’s story a lawyer needs to be creative as the title suggests in doing his job.

This would be a good book to use in an American literature course or a creative writing course dealing with mystery/thriller/horror short stories to see samples of these kinds of stories and promote discussion on this particular genre
