Surviving
Horse Island
Kids vs. Nature Book 3
Written by Karl Steam and Illustrated by Joshua Lagman
2018
ISBN: 978-1-63578-010-9
Karl Steam has written a third installment of his Kids vs. Nature series titled ‘Surviving Horse Island’. This installment of Josh and his new friends and classmates along with the ‘app’ has more surprises for this unlikely group of friends. The story starts with one of the characters deciding on
how to answer a question the teacher asks and the ‘app’ seems to whisk all of them to another unknown destination and none of them were even using their phone. This is a story of learning and understanding nature, science, and living in more ways than one. A quest for survival in many ways.

At the end of this installment of the Kids vs. Nature series, there are questions and answers on how to survive if ever stranded on a deserted island. Questions ranged from drinking ocean water to how to collect water. There were also questions on wild horses or feral horses. This is a great book for several mini-lessons from Across the Curriculum. One lesson is all about how these horses first arrived on this island. The cover design by Josh Lagman does it again by showing how cartoon characters fit in with realistic surroundings to solve missions and still not give away the story. The individual pictures throughout the book will make the readers want to go to this island and live the adventures.

None of the characters in the narrative were even using their phones when the story begins with one of them debating how to respond to a question posed by the instructor. In more ways than one, this is a narrative about discovering and comprehending the wonders of nature, science, and everyday life. In many respects, it’s a struggle for survival.

This book not only entertains but also teaches kids about teamwork and resilience in nature. I think incorporating interactive elements, like games or quizzes about the island’s wildlife, would enhance the reading experience even further!

Drift Hunters
Sounds like another wild ride for Josh and his friends! I’m intrigued by how the ‘app’ continues to pull them into these unexpected situations without even using their phones. It’s great that the story incorporates learning about nature and science alongside the survival aspects. Makes me think of the thrill of mastering a difficult drift in a game like Drift Hunters – you have to understand the physics and adapt to the environment! I’m eager to see what challenges Horse Island throws their way.
