This is definitely a story of diversity in many ways and how we can all learn from one another. We all
have our issues and at times they will intermix with each other and problems will arise and decisions
will need to be made. The main character of Isabella Fields is a Hispanic female and accepts her way of life till she has questions when she meets someone from the other side of tracks or river in this story.
This is a story of learning to accept one’s standing in life, but it is okay to let others in once in awhile.
Mayra has written a novel that will have readers in smiles and tears for we all need to find an
understanding in dealing with various family relationships. She uses the Spanish language in all the
appropriate places, especially with Isabella’s father in trying to explain her relationship with an old
friend that she meets again.
The title ‘Salty, Bitter, Sweet’ is a perfect title for this book that did describe the characters and their relationships very well as well as the food. As on the cover it is a book of a fresh start, a broken heart, and a menu of life’s
possibilities when presented. It is a novel of love and friendship both familial and romantic.
This would be a good supplemental read for a human services/counseling course learning about
diversity and various relationships and how actions can be deceiving but understandable at some point.
It is also a book that could make learning about others the same way you may look at yourself in
various situations when presented with life and all its possibilities.
