Mary Cohen, William Dandurand, Elisabeth Revel
Can a children’s book series change the world? It just might be happening right now, with the popular series featuring Hillary the Little Ladybug, who debuted in early February of 2017. She’s had a great many adventures since then, and the 16th book in the series – Hillary and Malibug Beach
Co-authored by William Dandurand, Elisabeth Revel and Mary Cohen, the illustrated books explore climate change and other topics in stories aimed at seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade students. All proceeds from sales of the “Ladybug” books benefit Mother Nature Festival Live Inc., which endeavors to stop harmful climate change Hillary has quite the life for a ladybug. Mary, William and Elisabeth has created a children’s picture, chapter book that is all about a ladybug named Hillary and how her visit to Malibug Beach where she meets the neighborhood gang, and then learns about the secrets of the area.Mary, William and Elisabeth created this story that kind of reminded me of a flannel board story with how the pictures of the characters kind of overlap the realistic photographs. The picture that I thought was really creative was on page 45, but also in a way is a bit weird in a good way. Other pictures that I liked were the ones when they were all flying over the countryside. Hillary has an adventure that includes characters of a different breed. Teachers could use this early chapter picture book in dealing with subjects from ecology to making friends, and even using one’s imagination. ‘Hillary and the Malibug Beach’ is a story, picture book that shows friendship and what to do when suspecting that something is not quite right.
