It’s a bit of an oxymoron but I’ve always liked Historical Fiction. The Kent Family Chronicles, Killer Angels to name a couple very Young Adult Historical Fictiongood examples. General Houston’s Little Spy by new author Cara Skinner is a Young Adult historical fiction novel .It’s the story of of  the creation of The Republic of Texas and their fight against Mexico’s General Santa Anna as they gain their independence. This is a fun way to get kids interested in history  and this new book is just the thing for Texas. We learn a little about Davy Crockett,Jim Bowie and the rest of The Alamo defenders. It’s also a nice chronicle of what life might have been like back in the early 1800’s. It’s always fun for kids to see a young hero succeed. Our hero here is 16 year old Samantha. Samantha and her new Husband venture  to Texas from their home in Tennessee. Author Cara Skinner born in Texas researched this bit of history very well making sure the action at the Alamo and places like San Jacinto is factual and easy to read at the middle grade level.
