The Four Classic Stories
of an Adventurous Blue Crab
and His Chesapeake Bay Friends
Priscilla Cummings Illustrated by: A.R. Cohen
Schiffer Publishing, Ltd.
What memories that this book brings back. The ‘Chadwick Treasury’ is a collection of four stories that takes me back for I used to live in the Chesapeake Bay area. Priscilla Cummings as compiled four Chadwick stories that teaches readers about what causes pollution and how the characters work through various issues in each story.
The stories that this collection shares are ‘Chadwick the Crab’ that introduces this character followed by how Chadwick and friends deal with societal issues followed next when Chadwick and friend get married, and finally starts understanding and learning what’s around him and them in and out of the water.
Teachers and other care givers could teach about conservation and how keeping their homes and neighborhoods litter free so that ‘Garplegrungen’ does not happen. The illustrations used were very detailed images depicting how all the characters lived and what was happening along with the words that made the reader know exactly what could happen and does when pollution takes over.
These stories tell us that we all need to do our parts somehow to stop ‘Garplegrungen’ in all its’ forms. This picture book is very educational in its’ own way. This is a story collection for early childhood and primary grades that teaches social skills and begins studies of science topics, as in pollution.
Chadwick Treasury Summary
A Chadwick Treasury begins with the original story of Chadwick the Crab, a little crab in the Chesapeake Bay who has big dreams of becoming a star at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. The adventures continue when Chadwick teams up with friends Bernie the Sea Gull, Toulouse the Canada Goose, and Baron Von Heron, among others, to tackle the problem of pollution in Chadwick and the Garplegrungen. Romance blossoms next. Chadwick asks his special friend, Esmerelda, to marry him. Chadwick’s Wedding is a joyous event in Shady Creek. Finally, in Chadwick Forever, our beloved crabs celebrate the arrival of their new family just when other bay friends find themselves on the endangered species list. Chadwick hopes readers will enjoy the stories and will also be inspired to help keep the Chesapeake Bay a safe place to live.
