You have likely heard of Dyson Vacuum cleaners by now.   The story of James Dyson, the inventor,  is a fascinating one.   If you don’t know it, I encourage you to read it just to give you hope and inspiration in your passion.  Dyson has invented a unique fan called the Dyson Air Multiplier.  They are a bit funny looking too.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

October 2006 Dyson launched the Dyson Airblade, a fast hand dryer. The Dyson Digital Motor produces an air stream flowing at 400 mph. This unheated air is channeled through a 0.3 millimetre gap. A sheet of air acts like an invisible windscreen wiper to wipe moisture from hands.

Dyson’s recent addition is a fan which is seemingly without blades, which he calls ‘Air Multiplier’. The illusion is created by moving the blades into the stand and channeling air through a hoop with a gap. The air flow through the bottom of the stand is “multiplied” three different ways in the fan structure. The first way is when the air flows over a wing like structure in the fans ring. It is further multiplied when it passes over the cone shape, also in the fan ring. Both of these create negative pressure and pulls the air around the fan through it. The final multiplication step is through viscous shearing when the air leaves the fan ring. The moving air shears through, and pulls in, yet more air flow; hence the 16-times multiplied air.  (credit Wikipedia).

I don’t really understand the technical stuff mentioned above, so I am going to give you a moms view of the Dyson Air Multiplier.

MOM LIKES

NO BLADES! I am excited that Mr Dyson thought of small children and was able to build a fan that doesn’t have them.

Easy to clean. It takes forever to clean each blade in most fans and a hassle to take them apart to do it. This fan is a mom’s dream.

Quiet except when on highest setting it is a little bit loud.

Rotating and tilting features.

Powerful.  I can feel the fan across the room.

MOM CONCERNS

The price is a bit hefty but if they prove to be as long lasting as the Dyson Vacuums it would be worth the investment. I would definitely buy one if I had the funds. Plus you can’t put a price on the safety factor.

My six year old Nolan and I made a video to show you just how the Dyson Air Multiplier works.  This review is for the 10 inch fan.

PURCHASE INFORMATION

Everyone that has been to our home have gone straight to the Air Multiplier. It is very cool to watch.  I sold my dad on it and he is going to buy one. My father in law was just as impressed.

You can purchase Dyson Air Multipliers in different sizes and prices on their website and from retailers like Target and Best Buy.  The new size tower and pedestal fans will be exclusively available from Dyson.com late summer of 2010.  Don’t forget to get a vacuum while you are there!
