White Sheets to Brown Babies is a memoir of the life of Jvonne Hubbard, a little girl who was raised to hate minorities through the indoctrination of her father, who was the Grand Dragon of a North Carolina faction of the KKK. It includes tales of living through a lifetime of dysfunction, violence and terror at the hands of both her father and other nefarious individuals who would seek to perpetuate the cycle. More importantly though, it is also a story of how they did not succeed in this hateful quest, as Jvonne struggled on and through to the other side to embrace love, laughter and the pursuit of personal happiness. Part of this amazing transformation even led to her adoption of a biracial infant, an event that served both as a healing elixir to her soul and a grandiose “!#%& you” to all the ugliness that hate brings.

REVIEW

“What a life?” What is right and wrong?  Jvonne Hubbard has written her memoir ‘White Sheets to Brown Babies’ a narrative novel of a child that was being raised by a KKK father kind of during her growing up and a mother who at times just did not care for her at all.  This is her story of how she was raised and how she changed her life around very slowly with a lot of ‘stop and go’.
Jvonne writes from the heart with a lot of help from the Lord, who according to her felt did not care what happened to her.  In the book, on page 150, she wrote a poem ‘Tigger Shoes and Orange Cheetos’ a poem that describes living and for a child that improves own life.  Seeing life through another’s eyes.  ‘White Sheets and Brown Babies’ a memoir would be a good book for social workers and social work students and even counseling students to read about how some people and the addictions and a book about various forms of abuse both physical and emotions as described by Jvonne.  This is a novel about recovery and recovering and learning how.  On page 192, Jvonne writes, “Survivors are always recovering-Survival is a state of mind.”  My idea I took from this memoir is the biblical saying ‘One day at a time.’
The cover art of the this novel shows Jvonne with her father and shows what she felt kind of at the time.
