Rick Stevens
This is a young adult mystery novel for a group of readers and writers who solve mysteries.
Rick Stevens has written a youth mystery story entitled ‘WECU Inc. (We See You)
This is the story of two kids by the name of Malaya and Kieran and a few other neighborhood kids
who solve mysteries that are real and some made-up. When they are not solving a mystery they are
writing their own mystery story. They gather together at an old motel that is now an apartment
building where some of them live. In this apartment building where things and events seem to
happen to people they know and even do not know. It starts out with Kieran who is a foster
child to a family who wanders around the basement area and can hear some conversations from
other tenants through the air vents. This is how he meets Malaya. The group forms WECU, Inc.
and their first mystery is to help a boy to understand how why the ‘Babba brothers’ do what they do. Rick Stevens has written a novel that is all about finding a way to help others as well as making
friends that find out that they have similar interests. The format of the book uses large print and
double spacing that keeps the story moving along and the reader sees how all the characters show their
own talents to solve mysteries and learn about themselves and helping others, too.
Do you or your child like the old Scooby Doo cartoons? Malaya named their group WECU Inc. modeling it after the Scooby Doo group’s name ‘Mystery Inc.’ Kieran is enamored with ninjas. They band with three neighborhood boys to investigate mysteries in the huge, old apartment building in which they live.
The WECU group really comes together after a notable success, discovering a serious crime. One of the boys recommends that the group enter an informal story-writing contest. This results in the second half of the book alternating between chapters with the group in real life and chapters in which they develop a fantasy story with themselves as characters.
