The War of Words

  By Amy Neftzger

Ever since reading about the adventures of Bilbo Baggins I’ve always gravitated towards the Sci fi / Fantasy Genre. So I was more than happy to give The War Of Words a shot.

I like a story that’s fast moving with lot’s of action. At first I felt that this book was a little slow and the battle scenes were lacking the excitement I was looking for.Going by the title I naturally assumed this story would be about the war. WRONG!As I got a little deeper into the book I realized how wrong I was.The war is really just the backdrop here. What we have here is a book with a message(And a pretty cool one at that). SO with a whole new outlook I started over from page one.

The War of Words has everything you want in a fantasy novel. Good-vs -Evil, Dark -vs- Light(and this is a very big part of it) an evil Sorcerer the well intentioned King that needs a little help (quite a lot actually) . Of course a cast of characters you’ll certainly grow attached to. My personal Favorite is Newton the living Gargoyle.

Ok so back to what I think is the message of this story. It’s all about the words. What words you ask? All words. The way you use them, The what ,where, when and how we use them.I love the way these learning lessons are scattered throughout the book and all surrounded by a very cool story. You have to understand how it all fits into the context of the story, but trust me it does.It all fits together quite well.My favorite little gem is when The King tells a confused Kelsey “Sometimes the most appropriate response to an attack is not to engage. Especially when your own words may be used as a weapon against you.”

Of course I could be wrong about the message the Author is trying to get across here. Maybe she just wanted to write a good Fantasy Novel with fun characters for young teens to enjoy…

                                                                                                              Well she did that too.

Book Description for The War of Words:

Sometimes there’s no better way to understand reality than through fantasy, and the best way to find truth may be in a book – if you can find the right one.

And now an Interview with Author Amy Neftzger

What character was the most difficult to write?

Kelsey was somewhat difficult because she has some abrasive qualities and in order for readers to engage with a book the characters need to be accessible. Let’s face it: sometimes Kelsey can be a real jerk (she doesn’t mean to be – she’s just very focused on her mission and goals). This was the third book in the series, so by this time she had matured and learned a few interpersonal skills.

What made yo write a book about Words?

First of all, I love words. I enjoy language and books about how words are used. Secondly, I was watching a news story about politics and I saw how the different individuals could use almost the exact same words and twist them to mean different things. That’s what sparked the concept about an evil sorcerer who changes words around to confuse people. The book is something of a metaphor.

What is your next project

My next project is already over half finished. It’s another YA novel, but this one is much, much darker. It’s about perfection and the sacrifices we make in our efforts to achieve it.

What is your writing schedule?

I write every day, but I don’t always have time to write what I want. I also write articles and book reviews for publication in journals. I try to make time for the fun stuff (fiction is my first love).

What is your favorite travel spot?

There are so many great places I’ve visited, and I wish I had more time (and the money) to travel more frequently. My favorite travel spot so far is probably Paris because there are so many wonderful museums and the architecture is beautiful. I’ve been there a few times and always enjoy my time there.
