Sports Memorabilia Collecting Made Easy

A Guest Post by Gracia Smith

Professional sports seem to just keep getting better. As improved training techniques and technology continue to develop, more and more star players will emerge, creating exciting games and heated rivalries. As a result, the value of sports memorabilia, both financial and emotional, will also rise. Whether you’re new to collecting or already have a collection going, here are some tips to improve:

  • Decide What Kind of Collection You Want

An important step to having a great collection is deciding what kind of collection you want to have. Do you want to limit it to one sport, team, or player? Are you just a fan of sports in general and like collecting all kinds of gear?

There’s no right or wrong answer to this question, it just helps you to narrow down what you’re looking for. If you’re an avid NFL fan and couldn’t care less about other sports, you wouldn’t want to waste your time looking at sellers for those sports. Additionally, you should decide if you’re willing to spend large amounts of money for very rare pieces, or if you’re just a fan of collecting gear and trinkets.

  • Find a Good Source

Once you know what your “brand” is, it’s time to do a little research to find where to buy the collectibles you want. Thanks to the internet, it’s easier than ever to find rare sports collectibles. You can buy what will become your most prized possession without leaving your front door! If you’re going to use an auction site like eBay, make sure that the seller has good reviews and that the site can be trusted.

  • Protect Your Collection

After going through all the effort of building up an impressive collection, whether it’s hundreds of pieces of just one item that you really love, you need to take some steps to protect it. Display cases, plastic coverings for cards, and other options are ideal. Find options that protect from user error (knocking things over, making a mess, etc) and other natural causes like earthquakes or the sun. That’s right, sunlight can destroy a great collectible. Here’s an in-depth explanation from the Library of Congress.

  • Share Your Collection!

When it comes to your collection, you are the only person that really needs to be impressed with it. However, there’s a lot of fun to be had by sharing your collection with other people. Again, the internet makes it simple to do that. If you’ve got a great piece, we encourage you to post it on social media or to invite other fans over to see it. Watching the big game surrounded by gear from your favorite team is a real treat! Plus, by seeing other collections, you might get some inspiration for your own.

As you can see, building up your sports collection doesn’t need to be a complicated or even expensive task. It starts with a single item and then builds into quite an addictive hobby. You never know when you’ll stumble upon your favorite piece, so get started now!
