Encouraging your children to read

A Guest Post by Andrea Buginsky

You know it’s important for your kids to read. It helps them develop their vocabulary, learn about the world, explore new worlds, and build their imaginations. But with all of the electronics available to them today, kids are not always excited to read. They would prefer to play with their gadgets, hang out on social media, and play online and video games. Reading is not very high on their list.

So how do you encourage your children to read? How do you compete with all of those cool gadgets? One solution is to schedule family reading time. Pick a day or two a week, or an hour or two a day, to shut off all gadgets (except for eReaders), and spend quality time together. Place comfy cushions on the floor, go outside and sit under a tree, or simply sit around the dining room table. Wherever everyone can sit quietly together and enjoy a good book. You can each pick your own, or pick one to read together as a family.

If you opt for a family selection, you can host a family book club. Have everyone discuss the book, and compare and contrast what you like and didn’t like about it. If you opt for individual books, have everyone talk about what they like about their book at the end of the session.

When you first start your reading sessions, be prepared for complaints and excuses from non-readers. Put your foot down and move ahead with the session as planned. To help ease your kids into the sessions, take them to the library so they can pick out books they’ll be interested in reading.

By implementing family reading time, you’ll help your kids discover new books and authors, and hopefully a love of reading.
