Pieces Like Pottery : Stories of Loss and Redemption

A Collection of Short Stories by Dan Buri

The best thing about this book is the fact that it’s a collection of short stories. All very well written and they all make you think.I thoroughly enjoyed every story. After reading this awesome piece of work by Dan Buri it makes me wonder what he could do with a full novel. It made me think of the BEATLES Abby Road Album and the way they short storiesconnected  a bunch of songs together to create the masterpiece it is. Well that’s exactly what Mr. Buri did here,Connected nine short stories together to create a masterpiece!

These most definitely are stories of Loss and Redemption. If it’s happy, joyful Fairy tale fun you’re looking for, well this ain’t it. Life can be tough for many of us and Author Dan Buri brings that to the fore front with these powerful stories of life’s (as he puts it)  “Five Sorrowful Mysteries”. We see parents dealing with the loss of a child. Another story about the impact a teacher had on a man as he visits him one last time before he dies.   My favorite is titled Twenty Two. We follow the story of a man as he tries to cope with the pain and memory of a past he cant seem to live with. The empty life he leads and the shocking, ironic and tragic twist at the end.I read a few of these short stories twice I liked them so much.I’ve read plenty of Short story collections before and most times I might find one or two that were not as good as the others but not Pieces Like Pottery.

The characters in each of these short stories are strong and very believable. This thought provoking collection of stories might very well bring you to tears or at the very least squeeze a few emotions out of you.

When reading a book I like to try to figure out what exactly the author is trying to say with the title. Now of course I’m probably wrong on this but the way I see it Pieces Like Pottery : Stories of Loss and Redemption is telling us that like pieces of Pottery life is fragile and to be careful how we handle it. -OR- it could be as simple as his stories are the pieces and this book is the final piece of pottery. after all what do I know…
