The Importance of Reading to Your Child by

Paulette Bogan

Bossy Flossy by Paulette Bogan {A Book Review}Guest post and Giveaway…

Reading with your child is a time to bond and cuddle and laugh and fall asleep or, wake up! It’s a time to see your child light up at the pictures or the sound of your voice, to hear them say “again” and to have them read along with you.

Reading is a time to connect with your child. It’s a time for your child to connect with themselves and to imagine the possibilities that books suggest. When I was young I wanted to be Harriet the Spy, and travel like Pippi Longstocking.

Reading can give your child the ability to entertain themselves. But even older children who are reading by themselves can still be entertained by being read to. Once on a car trip with my three preteens and some older kids, I read aloud from a Harry Potter book. Of course I had to use different voices for the various characters – I have to entertain myself if no one else. At the end of the ride an eighteen year old in the back said, “Do we have to stop?”

Reading gives children (and adults!) the chance to escape into another world, to learn something new or, to read about something comfortably familiar. When I was about ten or eleven I was on a trip with my parents. The plane was going through so much turbulence people were praying, throwing up, and crying. My parents were calm, but I’m sure they were scared. I read a book through the whole thing! I was able to disappear into the book and tune out the turbulence around me. I found sanctuary in a good book.

Reading aloud with children can give them a life long love of reading, a memory of warmth, laughter, comfort, and a sanctuary. You are never alone when you have a book. And reading aloud with your child is where the magic starts.

    Bossy Flossy

My Review

You know I think I know this girl.Come to think of it I think most little girls (and boys) are at one point just a little bit too Bossy! I’ve written about my Grand Daughter many times.Especially when I read a book that reminds me of her. Well here’s another one. Bossy Flossy is all about a little girl that likes to have things her own way.She seems to like bossing people (and even her cat) around. She sees nothing wrong with that.

If you happen to know a child like this ,you know the one with the “attitude” this is the book for them. There is a nice little learning lesson here.Just the type of Life lesson I like to see in a children’s book. Nobody likes to get bossed around but to the one doing the “bossing”  it doesn’t seem so bad. But when things get turned around? well that’s a little different isn’t it.

This is a very fun book to read to a little kid and the illustrations are great.Very colorful and they add to the story very well. The Author also just bossy-flossy-flossy-was-bossyhappens to be the Illustrator too.

This is a great book not only for parents but I think it would be perfect for a teacher of young children to read in school. One more good point is it’s a nice big Hardcover. So If your so inclined to check it out it’s available at

Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Book Depository, Chapters Indigo
