When author J.L.McCreedy sent me a Paperback copy of her Newest creation “The Orphan of Torundi” for review I was glad to oblige. Her first book Liberty Frye and the Witches of Hesssen I thought was a very good read and very well written.

She did not disappoint. Unlike “Witches” which was geared more towards middle school ages, The Orphan of Torundi I think will appeal more to the High School age kids. The great thing here is if the boys would give it a chance they could actually get into it.Plenty of action and mystery here.

The story takes place in the South Pacific but for the most part could be any Private High School in the U.S. (except of course for the Jungle)toruni2

Sent away to  Penang American Christian Academy  in Penang Malaysia, 17 year old Samuel Clemens after living her entire life in a small village in the jungles of Torundi a small island in the Pacific couldn’t feel more out of place. Yes I said her and no Samuel is not a typo and yes I do know who the other Sam Clemens was!

Now back to the Story, Pay attention!

This is not your everyday High School Drama. Unless you consider getting stalked by Clouded Leopards, Chased by Assassin’s,high speed car and boat chases something your normal everyday High School senior goes through. Poor Sam all this and she still has to get a dress for the Christmas Formal.

Right from the start the Author grabs your attention and makes you want to learn more about the main Character. You find yourself in Sam’s shoes (or boots much to the dismay of her new High School friends) as she struggles with the reasoning of being shipped off hundreds of miles from home With her search for answers comes mystery, intrigue and danger and yes even a bit of High School romance. The writing on this book keeps you interested all the way though and moves along nicely. You can tell the author has a history in this part of the world with her knowledge of the area and customs. This all adds a bit of realism and believability to the story. With well rounded supporting characters it’s a fun and exciting book with all sorts of twist and turns for the Young Adult. It’s even got a pretty cool surprise ending .Very Enjoyable read , and why or how did a Samuel become a her? Guess you need to read the book to find out.
