Life Lessons Self-Help from the Silver ScreenGood quotes are always inspirational, and Life Lessons is filled with them. Noting that Cameron Diaz says that “Movies are the new books” in Bad Teacher, Gavin Jerome has created a book of quotes from various movies (where of course protagonists always have problems and try to solve them ) which he explains, often using examples from his own life, and then tells us what actions we can take in our lives to implement these ideas. Taking action, rather than remaining inert, usually goes a long way in making our lives better.

“We are all searching for the answers to life – eternal conundrums, how to be happier, healthier, more successful in business, in life and in love,” writes Jerome, and he has picked kernels of wisdom from the movies in order to help us attain these goals. For instance, in Star Wars Mark Hamill states “It’s just like Beggar’s Canyon back home,” meaning that his current monumental clash with Death Stars can be referred back to when he blasted swamp rats in his past. Then we are told to remember similarities in our pasts in order to apply them to our current problems and to realize that we’ve already faced something similar. Nicholas Cage is quoted as saying, “If they attack the car, save the radio,” in Valley Girl, reminding us to identify our priorities. Meryl Streep says “Instant gratification takes too long” in Postcards From The Edge, so that we can remember to be patient (since action is not always the answer) and that “good things come to those who wait.” The importance of making time to have fun, remembering that not everything is crucial, and calculating when to “make your move” are some of the other issues addressed in Life Lessons. We are also reminded that perfection is unattainable.

Gavin Jerome has dedicated this self-help book to “my favorite movie going partner, my loving wife Sarah,” and to his father, who taught him love “for all things dramatic.” He states that “I have read so many self help books I am in danger of becoming perfect” and writes that “I poured my heart out into this book because these movies have inspired me to overcome a good many things in my life.” One can sense his sincerity when he also writes that “I want these quotes to HELP you in your day to day lives.” It is easy to see how the idea for this book arose from the mind and feelings of a self help lecturer and professional speaker who has worked with Jerry Seinfeld, Paul Riser, and Steve Harvey as an entertainer.

Feel that your problems are overwhelming? Read Gavin Jerome’s Life-Lessons: Self Help From The Silver Screen, and you might just come across the answer to your problems, with tips on how to implement actions to help yourself in your daily life. Without a doubt you will be inspired not only to go on but to attain more than you have in the past.
