Geraldine

and the Most Spectacular

              Science Project

by Sol Regwan  and Denise Muzzio

What a wonderful imagination that we all have to use when we need it or not.  Geraldine is a second-grader who science books or childrenat times has too much imagination.  She is a daydreamer who loves science above other subjects and things.  She also loves outer space.  Geraldine is also an inventor of sorts for just ask her parents. She is definitely a child who has only one thing on her mind and it is science and it shows up in her other subjects as well.

Sol has written a children’s picture book that is perfect for a second-grader for it thanks to Denise shows the way a second grade classroom could look like today.  He uses language of a second grader for young children like to use big words.  He also used/chose manuscript printing for the text of the book.  Denise in her illustrations used primary colors and her artwork was made to look as if her second grade personality came out in her drawing of the characters and the classroom.  She drew the children with big heads as young children seem to do when they are learning to draw bodies.  Denise also shows this in Geraldine’s home environment too.

Geraldine and the Most Spectacular Science Project is most definitely a picture book that is perfect for a second grader, but could also be good for a first grader to get an idea of what second grade could be like.  The teacher could use this book as a literature/science lesson.  It is a picture book that could be used to teach outer space, inventions and even ecology, as the students in the book did with their projects.  There are also many arts and crafts projects as well to have the students create.  ‘Geraldine and the Spectacular Science Project’ is definitely a very good read to inspire a child’s or an adult’s imagination in a variety of subjects.

Geraldine is an energetic, spirited second-grader with dreams of becoming an astronaut. She knows that she’s clever and inventive, but can she create the winning entry in her class science contest? Armed with nothing but her strong will and the broken parts of her parents’ old gadgets and gizmos, she sets out to invent an amazing contraption. Will her invention wow her classmates and transform her from class troublemaker to creative scientist?
