Nothin’ from nothin’ leaves nothin’-You gotta have somethin’
If you wanna be with me- Nothin’ from nothin’ leaves nothin’
You gotta have somethin’-If you wanna be with me!

You may recognize those lyrics from an old Billy Preston song from the 70s. I remember that song Nothin’ from Nothin” from my High School days (yes I’m that old). I put the lyrics there because the first thing I did after reading the last page of FROM NOTHING is download this song to my iPod. Why did I do that? Well, to start I figure if he was good enough to play on the Roof Top with the Beatles well…

But as for the relationship to the book, it’s just a small part. No, FROM NOTHING is not about Billy Preston or the Beatles for that matter.

It is however about really good Music.  From nothing

  It is about Big Business.

It is about Dirty Business dealings.

It is about the Fork in the Road taken.

It is about the Fork in the Road not Taken.

  It is about Friendship.

  It is about Relationships.

  It is about Self Doubt.

  It is about Regrets.

It is about the world of Technology.

   It Is about Redemption.

   It is about Vegas.

Oh, and did I say it is about really good Music?

But mostly it’s about a man named Victor Selo

This is a 300-page thrill ride that takes readers behind boardroom doors and into the back alleys and underhanded tactics of a fictional, but completely authentic, Silicon Valley acquisition. The Author Ken Goldstein seamlessly blends backroom private equity deals, coders bent on revenge, and classic rock legends into a compelling novel that crosses between a cyber-thriller, a financial thriller, and rock-and-roll nostalgia.

I loved this book. Victor is a man that has decisions to make. Does he want to be a big-shot executive? Does he stay with Claire? Does he try to save his company? Does he just give it all up and Play?

From the start of this book, the author grabs you. He created a main character in Victor you just want to root for. I can kind of equate Vic to Charlie Brown. It seems he just can’t win. Just can’t kick that elusive football. He’s full of doubt about decisions he’s made in the past and decisions he needs to make. From the chaotic board room meeting with flying laptops to the lounges of Las Vegas Victor is on a wild ride.

It did start a little slow for me but that was only the first few pages and come to find out very relative to the story and what makes Victor tick. For anyone that’s ever dreamed of being a star and “PLAYING” on the big stage, this is the book for you. The ending was a big surprise for me I still don’t know if I like it. (I liked Synthia with an S) but I guess that’s the way it had to be.

This is one of the best books I’ve had the pleasure to review in a long time The best advice I can give to you folks is to go out and get this book…

Book Summary

Victor Selo had blown up his life. A wannabe rock star turned tech savant, he’d wagered his Silicon Valley executive position on a corporate inside straight and lost. Having security escort him out of the building was the best thing that happened to him that day. The rest left him in the hospital, broken, broke, and with no prospects.

That’s when a shadowy stranger with questionable motives came with an offer: a chance to get his life back – and better – if he simply cooperates. It would require becoming invisible for a while, but he would be hiding in the spotlight, playing guitar in a Vegas cover band. Reluctantly, Victor accepts and begins an odyssey he never could have imagined. One that involves a charismatic lead singer who owns the stage but aspires to own an Elvis wedding chapel, a mesmerizing woman who can play anything on her keyboards and can play with Victor’s head, and two specters from his old life offering competing devil’s bargains. Suddenly, multiple futures are opening up in front of Victor. All of them offer opportunity – and each comes with potentially catastrophic risk.

Populated with a wide array of colorful characters, brimming with reflections on everything from love to God to the price of commitment, and backed by a great soundtrack, From Nothing is an endlessly engaging work of fiction that will resonate like your favorite song.
