Etched ON ME is a easy turn pager!  I finished this book in a night in a half!  When I picked up this book, it was a Sunday night at 10:00pm.  I knew I had to go back to work the next day and I wanted to pick up a book for a little bit, (I told myself, I would go to bed at 10:30pm or 11:00pm) yet when I looked at the clock again, it read close to 1:00am!  I still had a little of the book left to read and could of finished the book that night, but knowing that I would have to get up to get ready for work in about six hours, I put the book down and told myself, I would have to wait and see what happened to Lesley, (the main character) the next night after work.

This is a well written book about a girl, (Lesley) who was sexually abused by her step father.  The author displays how the father’s abuse impacts Lesley in every way possible including the psychological, emotional and social effects of the abuse.  Lesley goes through a powerful transformation as a person throughout the story.  She develops in a positive way and negative way throughout the story.  Through reading this book, I commend the author on all her research and thought that she put in this book.  There is no doubt that Jenn Crowell researched what the effects of sexual abuse can do to an individual including mental illness, self inflicting harm and much more to one’s self and how one sees oneself.   In this book, Lesley grows past the abuse slowly through much personal self work, the support of loving people whom she meets and through human experience.  Some of the abuse will always stay with Lesley though.  Etched on me also shows the reader how the public and community have views and beliefs of how the victim of the one being abused may abuse if one were to have a child of her own.  Is the community right or wrong?  One will have to read this book and find out!

While reading this book, I throughly felt like I was a character in this book.  The development of the characters and the support- the strong sense of connection, love and some dislike toward Lesley is so strong, you want to keep reading to find out what happens next to Lesley!  I strongly recommend this book to others! Also, as a social worker, I would recommend this book as a required read for a social work or psychology student or any human service field major.  This student would learn about abuse and its many impacts on a person.  In their future career of choice, the student may have a similar client just like Lesley and the student can learn from this book.  Therefore, if you are looking for a great read, I highly recommend Etched on me!
