Dr. Seuss and His Impact on

Education and Literature, Pt. 4 –

Dr. Seuss and His Continuing Legacy
Nearly 80 years after the release of Dr. Seuss’s first children’s book, 16 of his books still hold spots in the top 100 bestsellers of all Dr Seuss's first booktime. In addition, many of them are still in print, and are still used regularly in the classroom for entertainment and education purposes. Writers are still influenced by his creative word play and breathtaking illustrations, and readers are still captivated by his imaginative tales.
It’s safe to say that although the great writer passed away over 25 years ago, he stills plays a colossal role in education and literature of today. With the advancement of technology, Seuss books are more easily available than ever, with e-books available for download, as well as Seuss-themed apps available on smartphones and tablets. Today’s children play computer games with Dr. Seuss themes, while also being exposed to his literature itself in the classroom. Quotes of his words are used in graduation speeches around the world, with newly commenced adults using his wise advice to tackle their future head on.
There is no question that Dr. Seuss’s legacy lives on today, and no one can seem to find an end in sight. Despite hundreds of thousands of children’s books being publicized in the past eight decades, none can come close to the whimsy of stories like Green Eggs and Ham. Even with hundreds of options available on the shelves today, parents are still purchasing this timeless story so that their kids can too laugh at the antics of Sam-I-Am and his Green Eggs and Ham, while also encouraging their picky eaters to try new foods using the book’s characters as examples.
When you think of classic 20th century literature, authors such as J.D. Salinger, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and George Orwell may first come to mind, however none of these authors has had the same impact on society as Dr. Seuss. Their works are studied by students of all ages, however their works are not truly appreciated in the same way they were upon their first release. This is what sets Dr. Seuss apart, as children today enjoy his books in the same way children have been for the past 80 years. Not only do children enjoy Dr. Seuss, but adults do as well; who can resist the call of his beautiful illustrations and unique rhyming patterns?

Looking back, few authors have had the same impact on our lives as Dr. Seuss. Out of the hundreds of books we were read as children, none stand out quite like these unique and beautiful pieces of literature. Dr. Seuss’s legacy continues to live on through all of through all of us, and by being passed down through the generations, will continue to do so for decades to come.
