Dr. Seuss and His Impact

on Education and Literature, Pt. 3 –

The Life Lessons to be Learned from Dr. Seuss
It’s no secret that children are highly impressionable, and teaching them the importance of certain life lessons during the early development stages of their life is invaluable to their future as adults. Fairy tales have been around for centuries looking to fulfill this purpose, teaching kids of all ages from all generations the importance of not talking to strangers and being aware of one’s surroundings. With the stories of Dr. Seuss, readers learn life lessons in a much more personal sense; readers feel far more connected to the characters in Seuss tales than they do to those in generic fairy tales. We can all reflect on a thing or two we learned from Dr. Seuss, but the true impact he has had on children for decades truly is astounding.
What may have seemed like small quotes as children have much more meaningful impact as adults. It’s no wonder with lines like “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” and “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You” that Dr. Seuss has played such an impact on childhood development since he first began writing books.
Unlike other writers of his time, Dr. Seuss focused on having a positive impact on children without being overly sappy. In this way, he has created stories with timeless messages that are applicable to children and adults of all ages. Dr. Seuss focused on stressing the importance of love, friendship, reading, learning, making the world a better place, and a long list of other life lessons that define children as they mature into adults.
When children are exposed to stories which encourage them to be themselves and pursue their dreams, they will continue to grow with these values in mind. By teaching children important life lessons through fun and relateable stories, they will begin to implement what they learned into their daily life, with it eventually becoming a part of who they are.
This phenomenon can occur with both positive and negative influences, with violent television shows and videogames being known to show an increase in violent tendencies in children who play them. Rather than promoting violence or crime, Dr. Seuss made it his mission to encourage children to pursue their dreams, and through this he effectively stimulated the imaginative minds of the children his stories reached.
Without role models like Dr. Seuss, it is hard to know if any of us would be the same people we are today. Through his stories, our parents and teachers taught us the most important of life lessons, and with those we grew into the compassionate and creative adults we are today. It will be interesting to see the outcome of the first generation without Dr. Seuss’s influence, as it is hard to imagine growing up without the guiding hand of his wisdom
