When Ellison discovers a necromantic tome while traveling the secret passages of her father’s mansion, she wonders if it could be the key to her freedom.
Until then, she must master her dark new power, even as her stepmother makes her a servant in her own home. And when her younger brother falls incurably ill, Ellison will do anything to ease his pain, including falling prey to her stepmother and stepsisters’ every whim and fancy.
Stumbling into a chance meeting of Prince William during a secret visit to her mother’s grave feels like a trick of fate when her stepmother refuses to allow Ellison to attend a palace festival.
But what if Ellison could see the kind and handsome prince once more? What if she could attend the festival? What if she could have everything she ever wanted and deserved by conjuring spirits to take revenge on her cruel stepmother?
As Ellison’s power grows, she loses control over the evil spirits meant to do her bidding. And as they begin to exert their own power over Ellison, she will have to decide whether it is she or her stepmother who is the true monster.
We asked Author F.M. Boughan How she develops her Characters
I guess there are two ways I can answer this—about how I conduct character development in general, and about my character development for Cinderella’s Inferno.
The latter is a little easier to answer, since most of the legwork was already done for me in book one! Almost every character from Cinderella, Necromancer returns for book two, so their development in Cinderella’s Inferno was an intentional, natural extension of how they were set up in book one. I tried to keep their personalities consistent while still accounting for the two years of time in between books, because let’s face it—the more people change, the more they stay the same. I’ve got my fingers crossed that I did justice to the characters in that respect.
When it comes to character development in general, however, I take a similar approach to many writers—and really, it’s an approach I learned from others, so I can’t take any credit for it whatsoever. First, I figure out what each character wants—what it is they are so desperate for that they’ll do anything to have it? Then, I figure out how far they’re willing to go for it: will they break their own moral code? What are they willing to sacrifice? And within that, I determine what they’re not willing to do for it, or what their breaking point is to walk away. The other important thing is to find the inverse—what do they not want or what will hurt them the most?
Then I try to ensure that I develop characters who are in direct opposition to each other so that inter-personal conflict and different approaches to problem-solving arise naturally over the course of the story.
All the other details—appearance, favorite colors and foods, personal history—can then be shaped around the core of that character. Once you know what makes a person tick, it’s easier to figure out the details!
