Baush logoI had the WORST glasses at the age of eleven. They were those “old school” kind that were both sunglasses and normal lenses. They changed to dark lenses when I went outside. Soon after my parents bought them for me, the lenses didn’t “change back” to normal, but stayed dark all of the time. I don’t remember complaining about it, but I do remember being teased. I had to wear those terrible dark glasses through the school year. There are even some awful school pictures of me wearing them, plus I couldn’t see very well through them! I have forgiven my parents for the humiliation. Just kidding mom.  And no, I will not post the pictures either.

cartoon nerd girlWhen we learned my oldest son would need glasses, I made sure he picked out glasses that he loved and were trendy. He was able to switch to contacts the next year.  It is easier for me to talk to him about everything, especially his self-confidence, because of my past issues.  I want to try and be as open as I can with my children and make sure they grow up independent and confident.   I’m far from perfect.  I think it is fabulous that Bausch + Lomb and Mom Central are offering a program called “daily talk” that offers advice and tips for moms. They conducted a survey that found moms are more comfortable discussing drug and alcohol abuse than talking about self-confidence issues.

According to the Bausch + Lomb website

Physical appearances become increasingly important as kids begin to encounter issues with self-esteem tied to their outward appearance. While mom may be reluctant to allow a child to transition to the use of makeup or even contact lenses, a recent academic study revealed that 68 percent of tweens (ages 10-12) and 65 percent of teens reported improved levels of performance in all activities after wearing contact lenses.2 Medical experts also agree that they have seen a positive change in the overall health and performance of teens after wearing contacts versus glasses.

Back-to-school is when many kids begin to think about improved skin care routines, contact lenses or are beginning to use makeup. “We encourage mom to use the opportunity tied to back-to-school physicals to engage her pediatrician or eye care professional in helping her to have the conversations on the more basic subjects of skincare and eye care so that she feels well-armed when negotiating with her teen or tween,” said DeBroff.”

Bausch + Lomb is encouraging parents to make an appointment with their child’s eye care provider by offering a free trial of SofLens® daily disposable lenses. Simply visit www.soflens.com for a free trial offer. Additionally, kids can enter the “Daily Score” sweepstakes for the chance to win a sports tote and to enter to win the grand prize, a $5,000 scholarship.

Make sure to check back in a few weeks, I will updating you on my teenagers experience with the new Bausch + Lomb SofLens thanks to Mom Central.  I’m curious to know if you are comfortable discussing self-confidence issues with your kids? Please let me know in the comments below. XOX
