Irish Writers Storymap
Ireland is home to quite a few of the most iconic and recognized authors, poets, writers and wordsmiths in literary history, with this island boasting multiple Booker Prize winners and Nobel laureates of literature. These legendary literary minds have come from all corners of Ireland, which has a reputation for literary greats.
Ireland has produced four Nobel laureates of literature (Seamus Heaney, Samuel Beckett, George Bernard Shaw and W.B. Yeats) and four winners of the Booker Prize (Iris Murdoch, Roddy Doyle, John Banville and Ann Enright) – quite an impressive ratio given its relatively sparse population in comparison to other Western world countries. It has also provided a source of lasting 
inspiration from writers of far-flung extractions; ‘Lord of the Rings’ author J. R. R. Tolkien was enlightened by the scenery of the Burren in County Clare to create the famous character Gollum.
