Courage in Patience is an inspirational book about child abuse. Ashley Asher is the main character who has been sexually molested by her stepfather from the ages of nine to fifteen. Her mother seems oblivious to it and betrays her even when Ashley finds the courage to confess the abuse to her. With no other choice, Ashley tries to survive while still being abused and retreats further into herself. Finally she is able to find help from a caring teacher and goes to live with her biological father, who gives her a more stable life. Ashley is then able to find the courage to heal.

Author Beth Fehlbaum takes us into Ashley’s world and makes us feel the heartbreaking pain of abused children. Because Fehlbaum has felt this pain herself, her novel, Courage in Patience, resonates with a raw realism. It must have been painful as well as cathartic for Fehlbaum to write Ashley’s story. Readers of this wonderful novel, especially abuse survivors, will be thankful and grateful that she did. Courage in Patience is recommended for 14 and up.
