“I was five that spring Annie choked on a jelly bean. She was twenty months old; she wasn’t supposed to have any. Mama made that quite clear. Sadly, I wasn’t a child that minded well, so I gave Annie one anyway. I figured she ought to taste how good they were. I figured wrong.”

Cold Rock River grabs you with that first paragraph and doesn’t let go.  J.L Miles has written a story about two memorable female characters.  Adie is a poor, pregnant seventeen year old who marries a man who openly cheats on her.  She is also haunted by the death of her little sister.  The other character, Tempe Jordon, introduced through a diary, is a slave girl born a century earlier.

Reading about Tempe’s life becomes a source of strength for Adie as she struggles to hold on to her marriage and rise from poverty and circumstances.  Miles’ is a talented writer.  Her sentences flow with a unique Southern flair and a fascinating storyline where the two stories come together.  She definitely did her research about chicken farming and her writing in Cold Rock River even made that subject interesting.  For book clubs there is much to discuss including slavery, relationships, poverty, and of course Southern writing and history.  Oh, and there are fabulous Southern recipes at the end of all the food from the novel, a great addition to the book club discussion.  So, grab your apron and a copy of Cold Rock River and you will have a feast for your stomach and your soul.
