The Sitting Swing is an emotional journey for
both the reader and the author. Irene
Watson has written a memoir about the pain of childhood and the emotional toll
it takes on us as adults. Irene’s
immigrant parents consisted of an emotionally unavailable father and an
overprotective mother. Irene reveals the
sad catalyst for her mother’s irrational behavior which will haunt her for
years. We follow Irene’s story through
her marriage and finally when enters treatment at the “Avalon” center. It is at the Avalon center where she finds
the courage to recover from her past.
Irene Watson writes with a
refreshing honesty that makes you want to be her friend. Her childhood is a
heartbreaking account of abuse. But
Irene’s account isn’t mired in self wallowing, she not only took the initiative
to heal from her past but to write this book and help others. She has an astute knowledge of addictions and
the reasons we have addictive behaviors.
Everyone can relate in some way.
I most certainly did. You also
need to read the book to see why she titled her novel The Sitting Swing. She
teaches how people can accept the past and move forward by rewriting life scripts
that have been passed down for generations.
My favorite quote from the book is below:
“Someday maybe we can all say
Thank God for addictions now I can live a happy, healthy authentic god centered
life. It’s never to
late to change your life, never too late to heal.”
Despite Irene Watson’s
difficult childhood, The Sitting Swing
is an uplifting and hopeful book that I highly recommend.
