The Professors Wives Club by Joanne Rendell, is a terrific debut about four women set at a fictional university.  The story follows the women as they band together to save a garden the dean wants to build a parking lot over.  Mary is the wife of the dean who wants to tear down the garden.  She is a Pulitzer Prize winning author, however she carries a secret burden.  Hannah is a former model whose husband may not be what he seems and she is struggling with guilt over her recent affair with one of her professors at the college.  Sophia gave up a successful career to become a mother of three young children including newborn twins.  Ashleigh is a lesbian who is afraid to reveal her true self to her parents especially her father who is a conservative senator.  They form strong friendships and make life changing decisions over the course of the book.

Rendell has a PhD in literature and it shows as her writing is crisp and engaging.  She must be an Edgar Allan Poe fan because there is a part of The Professors Wives Club where she weaves a mystery about him that adds a compelling and richer angle to the story.  The story tackles tough issues and struggles that women go through.  I felt connected to the women and their stories and especially liked Sophia’s character.  The cover may look like the typical “chick lit” fare, but inside there is an entertaining story that is truly a good book to curl up with.
