I only have time to read at
night so during my journey with The Last Queen by C.W. Gortner, I would find myself thinking about the main
character Juana of Castile often. To me,
this is the sign of a complex and intriguing story. Known as the Mad Queen, this is the story of
Juana’s life, and what a life it is - filled with betrayal, passion and
conflict. Gortner's novel is divided into four stages
of Juana's life, Infanta, Archduchess, Heiress, and
Queen. In Gortner's
interpretation of events, Juana personally recounts her life from the time she
was a child until her last days as Queen.
We learn about Juana's politically arranged marriage at the age of
sixteen to the Archduke Philip of
Well-researched and written
with a fine sensibility for this time period, Gortner
has an obvious talent for characterization and plot. In fact, I was surprised a man could write so
well from a woman’s perspective, especially portraying Juana’s passion and
ultimate detest for her husband. I look
forward to more from this talented author.
Also, make sure you check out his website which is full of information that adds to the
story.
