The main character is Towner,
or is it Sophya?
She tells us in the first sentence she lies all the time and we
shouldn’t believe her. But she is our
narrator so we follow along in her dazed and confused mind. The story rotates between her and John
Rafferty, the local policeman who falls in love with her. They both are trying to solve a mystery. Towner wants to figure out how her aunt died
and Rafferty looks for a missing young woman.
To say this is a quick read would be misleading. But because of all the mystery and the Brunonia Barry’s eloquent writing, it is worth the
struggle. This is a dark and somewhat
depressing book because of the subject matter of spousal abuse. But Barry writes it in layers that keep
peeling off until we get to the core of The Lace Reader, and its shocking
conclusion. This book, and the
character, Towner, will stay with you for a while.
