The Heretic's Daughter is historical fiction novel set in Salem, Massachusetts during the witch trials.  What make the novel even more compelling is the fact it is based on author Kathleen Kent’s ancestor, Martha Carrier, who was accused of witchcraft.  Martha’s story is told from the perspective of Martha’s daughter Sarah.  Sarah lives a hard life working beside her parents and three older brothers on their farm.  She is responsible for caring for her one-year old sister Hannah when the two are forced to live with her aunt and uncle during an outbreak of smallpox in the home.  When Sarah returns home she discovers things may not be as she seemed.  Witches have been discovered in nearby Salem and soon her uncle, aunt and mother are accused of witchcraft.

The research Kathleen Kent did for The Heretic’s Daughter during this time period give her novel greater accuracy.  Kent depicts the hardships endured including back breaking work, the plague, Indians, and of course, the witch trials.  Her writing is simple but elegant and the characters are wonderfully woven.  She sheds light on this terrible time in history.  But it is the story of Sarah and her mother Martha that is at the heart of this novel.  Their story is both beautiful and touching.  If you like historical fiction you should put The Heretic’s Daughter on your must have list.
