Midwife of the Blue Ridge by Christine Blevins is an engaging historical fiction story. It is set in the 1760s and the main character is Maggie Duncan. Maggie becomes the only survivor after an attack on her village and she soon finds a home with a kind midwife who teaches her the trade. But after her foster mother dies, Maggie has to become an indentured servant in America to survive. It is there she finds love and the courage to survive in this harsh time in history.

I really enjoyed reading about the struggles of frontier life in Virginia and before that in Scotland. The author of Midwife of the Blue Ridge, Christine Blevins, really did her research. She writes using the language of that time period which makes it even more interesting and educational. I thought the storyline was a good one, but unfortunately I didn’t feel a connection with Maggie. I did like the romance in the story even though I did know how it would turn out. Early American History is a fascinating time period to read about and Maggie is a strong character who survives a great deal of ordeals. If you enjoy this type of historical fiction then Midwife of the Blue Ridge is a solid read.
