Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott is a
powerful novella. It is the story of
"Alice",
told in first-person about her kidnapping and imprisonment at the hands of Ray.
Ten years old when abducted, Alice is now fifteen and
getting too old for Ray's preferences. She's
starved so she won't develop, she's forced into 'Brazilian' waxes and taking
the pill constantly so there will be no periods. Worst of all, Ray now wants Alice to help him
find his new Alice, a new little girl he can love and call his own just as he's
done to her.
Living Dead Girl contains violence,
molestation, and graphic sex. The author
shows us Alice’s world and shows us no mercy,
just as Alice
was shown no mercy. I had to put this
book down in disgust but picked it right back up again because I was so drawn
to it. Elizabeth Scott is a talented writer and her story is gripping, dark and
disturbing. Ultimately, Living Dead Girl
ends in hope and raises awareness towards child abuse, that
unfortunately happens every day in our world. This is an important book and would make for a
insightful discussion with teenage girls, but I highly recommend Living Dead Girl be read by parents first
to make sure your teenager is mature enough to read it.
