You know you’ve moved into a dangerous part of town when the first person who learns of your pregnancy is the neighborhood drug dealer.  Home Girl is the memoir of Judith Matloff.  Judith was a journalist traveling all over the world covering the news, when she finally decided to settle down with her husband, a fellow journalist. Where else but New York’s Harlem would a woman who had reported on major wars feel at home, right?

Judith and her husband decide to re-model a house in a dangerous and drug-infested part of Harlem.  They have to endure everything from daily police raids, inept help, and people defecating on the front stoop.  My first thought was what a brave and crazy woman Judith is.  My second was what a brilliant writer!

From the characters who live around Judith’s house, to her struggle to become a mother at the age of 42, I was enthralled with her story.  In fact, I was so interested that I Googled her, and to my delight I found she had made a video showing viewers around her house.  She even filmed the infamous “Salami”, her neighbor.  Judith sure knows how to live, and those who have experienced her story are better off for having read about how she has lived her life.  Watch her video below~
