Brief Gaudy Hour
by Margaret Campbell Barnes was
first published in 1949. It is the story
of Anne Boleyn. Many books have been
written about her and I have only read one other which was the very popular The Other Boleyn Girl. That is one of my favorite books and I have
to say that Brief Gaudy Hour is just
as good. Anne was the infamous love of
King Henry VIII and the mother of Queen Elizabeth I. Barnes portrays her as a smart and ambitious
woman who became hardened after her heartbreak from Henry Percy. Because of her ambitious father and her looks
and cunning, she was able to beguile the King and eventually her rise would
become her undoing.
Again I didn’t feel as if I
was reading a novel written such a long time ago. I was impressed with Barnes’ rendition of
Anne and her research into this time period was evident. Brief
Gaudy Hour was rich with details of the Tudors court, which is always
interesting to me. This is a solid
historical fiction tale of a fascinating woman and I highly recommend it. You
