I loved The Giant’s House by Elizabeth McCracken, so I was excited to read
her new book, An Exact Replica of a Figment of My Imagination: A Memoir. Her new book is not a work of fiction, but a
heartbreakingly honest memoir of her experience of losing her son to
stillbirth. McCracken’s story is
recounted by going back and forth between past and present. The past is the loss of her first son and the
present is her joy at having a healthy son now.
She tells us how she met her husband who is also a writer, how they
lived in various countries and how they ended up living in
An Exact Replica of a Figment of My Imagination is easily read in a few
hours. Once you start reading, you won't
want to put it down. What McCracken does
so well though is she doesn’t write as though she is wallowing in self-pity. Her strength and wit shine through in her
writing and leaves the reader with a feeling of joy and hope even though this
was such a tragedy. She has left a
loving tribute for both of her children and for her readers. Warning - Tears will be shed!
