The year is 1845, and A Small Part of History by Peggy Elliot is about the hardships and adventures that women went through while traveling alongside their husbands and fathers on the Oregon Trail.  The narrative is told through the eyes of two women.  One is Rebecca Springer, the newly married third wife of John.  John’s previous wives’ died and John already has four sons and one daughter Sarah.  The other part of the story is told by Sarah who is fifteen and resents Rebecca, especially after she finds out she and John are having another baby soon after they take off on the trail.

The story alternates in diary form and first person account, which can be somewhat confusing, but the writing and the story more than made up for it.  Peggy Elliot did her research and the story is focused on the sacrifices that women go through when they go on this arduous journey, especially with pregnancy and young children.  The preparation alone before the journey is fascinating and it takes months to get everything ready.  The characters were well developed and I felt myself going along with them.  I am fascinated by this time in history.  I have read a couple of books during this time period that are perfection (Laura Ingalls Wilder books and These Is My Words) so it is a difficult to compare any book to those.  I wouldn’t say it was on that level but I did truly enjoy the story as well as the writing.  A Small Part of History by Peggy Elliot was a quick easy read with a good history lesson, and it was well worth the time.
