Stephanie Meyer has responded to the criticism of her new book Breaking Dawn on a couple of websites today.  Click Here for the link to a series of video’s on Entertainment Weekly and below is from an interview from MTV Movie Blog.

‘Breaking Dawn’ Exclusive: ‘Twilight’ Author Stephenie Meyer Reacts To Harsh Reader Complaints — ‘It Hurts’

‘You see the punch coming; that doesn’t mean it’s not gonna hurt when it hits,’ Meyer says.

Last Saturday afternoon, less than a day after “Breaking Dawn,” the conclusion of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” series, hit shelves, the Internet grumblings began. Of course, many readers were still eagerly drinking up the saga of Edward and Bella. But one fast reader expressed her disappointment in the book by launching a discussion on Amazon.com urging fellow disgruntled fans, “Don’t burn your copies of the book — RETURN THEM.”

(SPOILER ALERT, though we’ll try to keep them vague for all you slowpokes.) And judging by the heated back-and-forth that followed, there are plenty of other Twilighters complaining about what is or isn’t in the book: the lack of more explicit sex scenes, the excessive amount of sex scenes, the implausibility of Bella’s pregnancy, the pace of the story, the lack of a big battle scene, the whole Jacob section, and on and on. One blogger told Entertainment Weekly that the story “didn’t seem to fit the world that I thought Stephenie Meyer created.” So how does the author feel about this venomous reaction to the novel that sold 1.3 million copies in its first day?

“You see the punch coming; that doesn’t mean it’s not gonna hurt when it hits,” Meyer told MTV News on Thursday. “There’s no way to make everybody happy. When I do one thing that a lot of people want, there’s always the opposite reaction.

“But how can you possibly meet up with the expectations that this book had?” she asked. “It just got so built up. There is no book in the world that could stand up to that. So I knew it was going to happen, but at the same time it hurts.”

Of course, members of Team Jacob can’t be too thrilled from the very start of the book. But Meyer won’t pander to their preference for Bella’s hot-blooded werewolf pal.

“If they really love the characters, then I would hope that this would make sense to them, because these are the true characters,” she explained. “This is the story the way it was always meant to be.”

And other readers are giving Meyer grief about the fact that Bella does get a “happily ever after” without having to make any major sacrifices.

“I think she worked for it pretty hard,” Meyer countered. “It doesn’t always work out that way. Sometimes you make a decision about what you want and you pay for it and you suffer for it and it doesn’t work out. Those types of stories always leave me horribly depressed. I’m not going to live in a world for a year at a time where that’s going to be the ending. If people wanted a really depressing, tragic ending, I gave them a lot of hints that it wasn’t going to be that way. They really shouldn’t have been surprised!”

And though Meyer knew the complaints would come, she was surprised by what some of them were about. One minor quibble seems to be the awkward name of Bella and Edward’s daughter, Renesmee.

“I should have known that people would feel that way,” she laughed when we read aloud one comment about Bella’s hybrid of Renee and Esme. “The name has been real to me for so long now that I’ve forgotten how unusual it would sound to everyone else.”

Meyer did seem taken aback by the “don’t burn it, return it” threats. “I’ve read a lot of books that I didn’t like very much, and that thought never occurred to me, because I had read them! I hadn’t heard of [doing] that before. That’s not fun to hear.”

But Meyer holds out hope that “Breaking Dawn” detractors will eventually see her side of things. “I hope that if they really do enjoy the other books, they’ll realize that this is kind of where it was supposed to go.”

I am so mad at myself for watching it! I shouldn’t have and I did – ugh! I didn’t know for sure they get married…now I know – ugh! No more watching or reading for me until I read the book. It’s on the way…should be here this week – yeah!

  2. Maia says:

I liked the book i was really happy when i heard that Jacob was imprinting on someone else (I hate bella) sorry
For me and my friends shes a total sult!
Though it was a little short =/ i was like i need more -.-”
i hate it that bella got that happy ever after ending!!!

  3. Abby says:

I loved Breaking Dawn – I am actually reading it for the 2nd time. I wanted a happy ending for Bella and Edward. I wanted Bella to have her sexual encounter with Edward as a human. Marriage was important to Edward (does this message upset some people?). Bella realized how much it meant to her also. Bella at 18 could not even grasp the idea she may someday want a child. However she loved the baby even before she knew she was pregnant, remember the dream forshadowing this event? She was thrilled to have Edward’s child because of the great, undying love they have. Is this message upsetting? To those who say that Edward could not father a child – read the book! The explanation is there. Is it realistic? This is fiction, people!! Was it easy for Bella and Edward? Let’s see…Edward did not agree with her, she had a horrible pregnancy and almost died. As for Jacob imprinting – it would have been more convenient for him to end up with Leah. And I loved Bella’s reaction to the imprinting! Bella and Edward had mature themes to deal with in this book, they had heartache, anguish and guilt. They faced death together. They remained true to themselves and remained passionately in love. Would we really be happy if Bella forgot what Edward’s touch and kisses did to her when she turned into a vampire? I was thrilled the experience was only heightened. Sorry Jacob lovers, but he just never compared to Edward. The backlash seems to stem from the fact that SM had the characters grow and mature. Bella and Edward would not remain in high school mode for eternity. Thank goodness – how boring would that be! Bella went from an inscure teenager to a confident young woman and she has eternity to accomplish what she desires, including college. They have their crazy, passionate love. And Jacob…well maybe he’ll be fighting for Nessie’s love in 6 years when she may choose to be with someone else. By the way, I love the name Renesmee. What do you expect for the child of a vampire and human? She needed something special. Stephenie, you delivered with this book! Thank you for having the courage to allow the characters to grow. Bella and Edward have their eternity with no regets to look back on!!

  4. Courtney says:

I thought the book was terrible. Jacob imprinting was disgusting, and Bella turned into a nympho.

  5. Cyntia says:

In my opinion, I hated the fact that both mother and daughter (Bella and Nessie) are Marie sues. I mean, that totally ruined the book for me. And the fact that there wasn’t any big battle at the end, made me realize that this book really isn’t what I had expected. NOTE: I hadn’t really created any illusions toward the book before it came out, since I was still reading the others. God, I so hated the fact that they both were so perfect. I mean, for god’s sake, Bella is practically better than anyone else that is a vampire! That is so stupid, really! And reneesme? Oh, another baby marie sue. I thought I’d love this book but, I just… enjoyed it, not loved it. It’s a shame, really. Meyers could have done much better.

  6. Sarah says:

I think Breaking Dawn is the best book of the series. I felt like the first three books were aimed at her younger audience, and the last book was aimed at her older audience.

I loved how things fell into place, and suddenly certain things that they characters had been doing for the last 3 novels made perfect sense.

Kudos to Stephenie Meyers on a great novel, and I hope she ignores all of the criticism!

  7. Alice says:

I enjoyed Breaking Dawn, more than New Moon and less than Twilight, and Eclipse. I think Stephanie did a great job on the book. Edward and Bella got married, she got her baby, and she was turned into a vamp. without having to wait 100 years to pass through the new born stage. Jacob also got a happy ever after, sort of, she got Renesme and got to stay with Bella as well. Edward also got what he wanted Bella, a child and his happy ever after. The only critic I have is that part II of the book should have been done in Edward’s perspective because no offense Jacob fans but Edward is so much better (and Hotter). In my opinion Jacob side of the story was alittle boring. but other than that good Job Stephenie.

  8. Kayla says:

I loved the whole Twilight saga. I think Breaking Dawn was the perfect ending. It was a fairy tale vampire story. I believe Bella suffered enough in the other books and deserved what she got in the final book. Not to mention she suffered when she became immortal I know some have an issue with that because she was able to hold still when she was suffering during the transformation but if you would recall reading that Bella stated she couldn’t move because of all the morphine and then when she could move she focused more on her new hearing ability and not wanting to hurt Edward, I believe that all made perfect sense. I also think it was wonderful that she and Edward got a kid before she turn immortal. That along with marriage before sex was something Edward wanted and I am glad he got it. (not to mention that is a good message to the reader) Though some people seem to have an issue with the name I see the name as something unique and something Bella really thought of she wanted her mom and her mom-in-law to be a part of it. Just like the middle name was including her dad and her dad-in-law…And if her daughter would have turned out to be a son it would have included both loves in her life still Edward and Jacob. So I believe that her daughter name though uniquely weird was still perfect. As for relating to Bella the immortal, it didn’t really effect me at all. I was able to relate to her love for her family and wanting to protect them. As for Jacob imprinting on Renesme, I think that was perfect as well. It kept Jacob in the family and close to Bella. I was a little enraged, but I got over when I realized all he wanted was her happiness just like Quill. As for the size of the book, I didn’t have a problem reading it. I was so into the book that I couldn’t put it down until I was finished, quite frankly I got done with it too fast. :(
I can’t think of anything else people were mad at right now, so in conclusion she is right, there are way too many readers whom have been anticipating the ending of the story for her to satisfy everyone. About half want one thing and the other half want something totally different.

I am sad to see the saga come to an end. Though I am thrilled with the ending. I will miss reading and being intrigued by Bella and Edwards love.

I believe Stephenie Meyer did a wonderful job with all the Twilight saga books, and I hope she continues with more to come.

  9. J Harbert says:

My complaint is that the story is very poorly written with too many contrived portions to allow you do hold onto that beautiful thing called the willing suspension of disbelief. No depth to the characters, Edward taking a virtual back seat to many others, hardly any developement for the new and improved Bella…who I could barely connect with.

I could have handled the plot twists had the book been wrtten with more depth and frankly a lot better editing.

  10. Fernanda says:

I loved the story. First of all I would like to thanks Stephenie for making the honeymoon in Brazil, especially in Rio. :~) We (all your brazilian fans) were very happy by the story around Brazil!!!

Stephenie muito obrigada, nós te amamos!!!!!!

It was magical to see Bella growing throw the saga and it was the right thing to show her self control as a newborn and her abilities handling the shield. The only thing I missed was the little description of their first time together making love and a battle agaist the Vonturi. Other than that, the book was perfect!!

And people, you are mad about the name? Please, even the caracters made fun of the name in the book, why are you so mad about?

The book was great! I can´t wait for the movie and the Midnight Sun.

    Beijos a todos!

  11. Julie says:

I didn’t bother buying the book. I read it online –and yeah it was then real thing. Didn’t like it then, don’t like it now. Me and my english teacher always havea descussion on how much we dispise Twilight. Yeah it sucks, but that’s not what makes me mad. People are like handing over Stephiene Meyer free money for a crappy book! Millions of dollars have gone to waste. What a society. That’s what hurts the most, that people spend there time loving this book when the four books can be shortened down to a sentence: Bella likes Edward, Edward likes Bella. The End. You know i wouldn’t even be suprised if Meyer lied that she dreampt about it to make it seem interesting because honetly, my dreams are better than her books. She must have a pretty pathetic mind. Sorry, but I hate Stephiene Meyer for brain washing young and old minds. But of course it is the fault of the reader for picking up the book as well, poor suckers

  12. STEP TEAM says:

    and that wont change!!

  15. Yeah, right. says:

To literate standards, the series is completely horrible and very, very mediocre.
Bella and Edward are 2-dimensional cardboard characters that don’t have defined personalities at all. Bella is one huge mary-sue, and practically, it doesn’t make sense to just have a world with humans, werewolves and vampires. I would’ve thought that there’d be more species or breeds or something, but the whole werewolves/vampires thing was just to sell the whole series… kind of like frickin’ downplayed vampire/supernatural erotica.

It’s geared towards teenage girls, yeah, but it saddens me GREATLY that they all just lap it up.
    Go read some real literature.

  16. Andy says:

breaking dawn was the biggest disappointment I’ve encountered. I hated the lack of a final showdown agains the Volturi, Bella getting pregnant was by far the most absurd thing in the entire series, Jacob imprinting on a toddler…it explains for itself, and Bella’s development into an all powerful entity just f****d up all conections *if any* I developed with her character.

  17. Rachel says:

I didn’t like the 4th book because the first 3 books were all about Edward and Bella and then this final book completely dismisses all the other characters and focuses only on Bella. Considering the fact that she turned out to be the complete opposite of what she was in the entire series-it was difficult to get into her personality as she was so mean and dismissive to people-especially Jacob. Not cool.

  18. Skarto says:

Authors are SUPPOSED to be set up for criticism.

Oh, sorry. REAL authors ARE set up for criticism.

    Fail, Meyer.

  19. lyNNie, RN says:

  20. Stephanie says:

I am 33 years old and I did like Breaking Dawn. Maybe it is not my favorite book of the saga but I do like the “HAPPY EVER AFTER”. I have been reading the reviews of some Fans and I would like the express my opinion.
If you want to read great books with depresing endings well buy “Romeo & Juliet ” or “Wuthering Heights”. I personally , if I want to read something depresing I would read the newspaper or watch the news, the real life can get were depressing sometimes.
I respect all opinions even the ones that said that Bella having is a bad influence for teenagers. Well I am sorry to inform you THAT MARRIED COUPLE DO HAVE SEX, and she is having a baby with her husband!!!! WHAT A SLUt !!! Come on guys. I respect the opinions that said that marriage this young is a sin or bad influence, in case you haven´t notice this is a novel not real life , in real life you would not married a 17 years old vampire , so if we believe that they exist in the novel and they fall inlove, she is not going to marry him when she is 25!!!. Even if she waited until she is 25 people then will say that it is a bad influence and that she should go to jail for marriyng an underaged vampire!!!!
And lets not forget that some people get married when they are young and some when they are 30 so what. Lots of people that married at 25 are divorce at 30. Lets not compare a novel with real life….
I do not see the bad influence anywhere, and I am happy that they ask Bella to abort and she refuses. If you think that to be a good parent you have to be 25 or more, maybe we should ask abused children all over the world how old their parents are….
But again this is a novel…
I also have to say that the birth scene is a little weird for me but I am not going to trash the whole book for that since I really do not know how vampires gives birth……..
My favorite TV show was (until I saw the last season)”Angel “and I watched it for 5 years and I can say that the depressing ending was a deception for me . SO WHAT you have to suffer and be really miserable all your life for it to feel real? And what about the Buffy`s ending A DISASTER.
“Blade” , “Angel”, “Buffy” they all have bad endings and I was surprised with the ending of Breaking Dawn , because I thought it was going to be like all the others and after I read the entire saga I did not wanted another depressing ending.
Some of us like reading “Greek Tragedies” but some of us also like Jane Austen`s novels where everybody has a happy ending and the poor girl always gets the rich guy (which lets face it with the prejudice there was in that century it was something unbelievable and impossible).
I only hope that they make a good job with the movies, I am a big fan of “Harry Potter” also and I have to say that the movies do not reflect the spirit of the book but that is Hollywood, LOOK WHAT THEY DID WITH THE MOVIE TROY!!!!
My husband and I have no problems with our 15 years old daughter reading these books.
You can not always pleased everybody, just ask George Lucas.. lots of fans hated the new Star Wars saga. I liked it less than the first but that was how Lucas, The creator of the Star wars Universe, always wanted the story to be. So if you do not liked don’t watch it but you do not have to insult him as lots of called “Fans” did.
I think that you can give an opinion without insulting or being rude. And I do like the HAPPILY EVER AFTER.

  21. Stephanie says:

Oh I forgot to say that since Bella is a vampire and she is going to live for ever with her husband, she will see her parents and her humans friends die, and that is not an easy thing to do.

  22. S.Y says:

Okay, it’s not helping Meyer that some people who enjoyed the book are
    a) Trying to rule out everyone else’s opinion with OMG!!!111 and NO WAY AMAZING BUK!!1!
Seriously, the caps lock button does not need to be permanantly on for you to express a point.
    Jeez.
    b) Lacking the ability to spell : / My Ten year old cousin writes better than half this forum.

Look, Meyer’s books did not appeal to everyone, I for one didn’t like her plot development, Mary Sue characters and pointless introduction of a suggested Pedo. Not to mention there are a lot of hole’s in her ‘unique’ Vampire logic etc
I say this because, I’m sorry to tel you guys, but there’s A LOT of material ‘borrowed’ from otehr movies/books.
Most Namely Queen of the Damned, most of the Anne Rice series and Darren Shan.
If Meyers HAS NOT read the book then forgive me, but that’s how I interpret her uniqueness.

    : /

But to everyone who’s like FAIL STEPHANIE etc, look, she wrote a book and had the balls to get it published.

    Have/did you?

  23. samantha says:

This is the most stupid book I’ve ever read. She didn’t even come up with the idea for the book on her own, she had a dream where the idea “came” to her. How lame is that.
She’s not even smart. Have you seen her writing? A 10-year old could have written a better book than that (for heaven’s sake, even I could have written a more interesting book).
I hate her for getting famous. She’s this stupid lady who wrote a stupid romance and got lucky. For some reason all those stupid girls fell for the book. HELLO! It’s about a boy and girl falling in love, BIG WHOOP. She put NO effort in the book; there are no twists, connections from one book to another, vocab, no PLOT. Bella falls in love with Edward, and in the end they get married. What a surprise. I really hate the stupid lady, she doesn’t know how to write. She doesn’t deserve the fame!! Someone like Christopher Paolini, who put EFFORT and time into the book, deserves the fame. Meyer is a sad girl who never got the ‘perfect guy’ so, in her book, she made herself (as Bella) get the perfect guy (Edward). How LAME!

  24. Sarah says:

YOU SUCK! Sorry, but it’s the blunt truth. Please, PLEASE, please stop writing. Host is the worst book I’ve ever started (notice how I said ’started’, as in I’ve only read about 2 pages.) STOP WRITING YOU TEENAGER!
grow up, and stop writing about your stupid, cliche, teenage fantasies. go away, stop writing, get a life! stop imagining about Perfect Paul. He doesn’t exist sweetie, sorry. Now stop torturing us with your writing. I hate seeing the little ads that say ‘Twilight or Harry Potter?” Obviously HP. So go away, stop writing, grow up, and most of all: STOP WRITING!

  25. chi says:

Stephnanie meyer should learn from more decent credited writers. Her book is so mysoginistic and sexist I cannot believe she actually madeitlike this. These books are hardly going to stand the tests of time. Fr good novels, both educated people, adults, young children and teens will appreciate the book.

but this book? Who make up the majority of the fans? Youg silly girls, Mums who fantasise of having an ‘edward’ husband, unsatisfied women, girls who depend on men in order to feel they are worth living.
these make up the majority of her readers. fangirls.

Bella and edward are so perect that is it unrealistic. for people who say ‘its fiction, its SUPPOSED to be unrelaistic’

I beg of you to study the literature, arts and then get back to me.

Like a person once said “Meyer thinks writing about extraordinary people is waht makes a great book, but it was always ordinary people that made the great book”

Bella is a fool to allow edward to abuse her time and time again. but becoz he’s HAWT!!1!, she forgives him for it all the time! how disgusting. this book sets feminisim back one whole century. she cook, cleans, mopes after a guy who just dumped ehr and then decides suicide will solve her problems! ohh wow, you;re such an inspirisng role model for women Miss.bella. you really are.

  26. chi says:

“”"But to everyone who’s like FAIL STEPHANIE etc, look, she wrote a book and had the balls to get it published.

    Have/did you?”"”

Sorry, but my mother has written novels too, and had the balls to get it published. but do you know the difference between my mother’s books and meyers? My mum put HARD EFFORT, THOUGHT, DETAIL, PLOTS, 3-dimensional characters in her bok. Meyers fails in al this categories.

Just becoz you have the ‘ballz’ to wrtie a book, dosent mean that book is worth anything. many, many people write books and gets them published everyday. the ones that stand the test of time are the ones that has effort behind it.

so what if she published a book? we should now respect ehr for it? and dnt readers have the RIGHT to critize a book they dislike? why must readers always be adoring and in love with a tuthor? I dont think so.

  27. Elizabeth says:

    Guys,
    It is just a book!
Enjoy the reading, it is fun and full of emotions, it is not a PhD dissertation! Take it for what it is and enjoy the ride.

Personally, I am now attached to the characters, happy that there is a happy ending (I’ve got real life to suffer on a daily basis) and sad because the saga is over.

If I want to read serious stuff, there is a lot of politics and phylosophy avalable at the bookstore, But for day dreaming and fantasizing meyer is good enough for me.

    Regards,
    Ely

  28. Claudia says:

there are only three things i am sure of:
one, meyer writes like a ten yer old girl -probably a girl with a very low self steem who spends all day imagining that a perfect guy will fall in love with her- and doesn’t know much about real literature.
two, meyer may have had a good idea once but she obviously didn’t know the differece between brain storming and creating a plot for a book.
and three, we, readers, have to admit that, like it or not, meyer did have the guts to write an entire book -i am not saying a good one- and published it, luckily for her we, readers, were interested in her first original idea and we, readers, made her a millionare.

i had to say that :)
meyer sucks as a writer, it’s true; but -i agree with S.Y’s comment- she did do something better than just spending all day insulting other people’s work, let’s give her that.

  29. yawn says:

I thought that breaking dawn was poorly written and ended any sort of plot that was being built up. I am not a twilight fan, and I am certain that were she to have brought Breaking dawn to a publisher’s attention, she would have been put on some secret publisher’s blacklist.

It wasn’t worth my time. How does paedophilia, nymphomania and mary-suedom make a good book? And then there are the fans. they will sometimes lash out at people for not liking breaking wind, I mean, dawn.

  30. Lara says:

As someone who started off loving the twilight series, even though it isn’t my usual type of book, I didn’t like the way things ended in BD.

I mean, I still did enjoy the book to a point, but Meyer, in love with her character, turned her into a bland and too-perfect Mary Sue, and Renesmee was also a much-too-perfect Mary Sue who I found to be the most annoying character ever created!!

Everyone who met her fell in love with her?? Come on, that’s classic Mary Sue. Bella’s perfection, grace, the fact that Meyer butchered her own universe…ughhh.

The reason this is compared to J K Rowling is because, while Rowling did give her characters a happy ending, there were realistic sacrifices made, and she remained true to her universe, not completely abandoning the rules to give her characters everything they wanted.

Jacob…well, he annoyed me in every book besides the first one. I found myself hoping he’d die in to save Bella or something like this – that, at least, would have given him a redeeming quality.

In short, no one likes a Mary Sue, and that’s just what Vampire Bella is, shallow, insipid, no depth. Edward, in this book, became like Jondalar in the Clan of the cave bear series. A cardboard cutout hero whose only role in the book was seemingly to praise his all too perfect wife.

    Ugh, ugh, ugh.

Not sure if Meyer would ever read this, but if she did, my advice would be, rather than acting like your Mary-Sue-ish character and whining about how mean and unfair people are – LEARN from their criticism and become a better writer in the process!

  31. jujubee says:

I love how so many fans say that SMeyer should just ignore all the haters and anti comments. If she constantly ignores the negative stuff and only laps up all the coddling the fans do, she’ll never grow as a writer. Her books were not that great. She could do so much better. But her quick fame and millions have gone to her head, and she thinks she can do no wrong, and that is why she’ll always stay the poor writer that she is.
And I believe that SMeyer has recently insulted Melissa Marr, so she’s not so innocent there.

And the whole “let’s see you write a whole book and get it published”, as if because I’ve never written a book means I have no right to an opinion of SMeyer’s books & writing. That works two ways. The lovers of Twilight, sorry but if you haven’t written a book yourself, you have no right to love the book and say it’s “THE BESSTEST BOOK EVAR!!111!!APPLES!!1″

wow, do u people have anything better to do other than trash Meyer? personally i think she is an amazing author, and u people say she writes like a 10 yr old, ur acting like a 10 yr old with no life, atleast she had the balls to write books, unlike u who writes 1 paragraph, And u say her books suck? will the twilight saga is getting made into a movies, i’d like to see u have the balls to write and publish over 4 books

  33. Stephanie says:

    You are totally right Emily!!!

I like the book of Stephenie Meyer and to be honest I love the book Breaking Dawn, AWESOME!! it’s getting more and more interesting!

I encourage Stephenie Meyer to go ahead and ignore such comments!!!

  34. Stranger says:

I had such a fun time reading these comments, especially the one about Meyer writing a book that she based off of a dream that she had. Is there something wrong with that? Because last I checked, most or all fiction books are based upon a simple dream or an idea one has. And also to the person who has a “mum” who wrote a book and got it published, exactly your “mum” wrote a book and got it published not you, so how can you put yourself into an arguement such as this one?

A book is for simple enjoyments, sure there may be other writers out there who you may think is better than Stephenie, so why don’t go read their books instead?

Breaking Dawn I’ll admit had some points in the book I didn’t agree to, but in the end it all worked out just fine.

I agree with jujubee because if she ignores all the “hate” comments then she’ll never grow as a writer. No one is born a naturally good writer.

  35. Julie says:

For anyone throwing insults at Stephanie Meyers books – if you can do better then DO IT and stop being so negative. I have read most of the classics, including Dracula and Wuthering Heights, and although the style of writing doesn’t compare, (and I don’t mean that in a snobbish or negative way at all), but simply that SM’s books are easy to read, thoroughly enjoyable, relaxing, enthralling, light and fun. In the way that I enjoy some films that are hard work and you have to concentrate to work out whats going on, I also like to see funny, simple plots too, sometimes I don’t like to have to think too much, so chill out people, be calm, if you don’t like it don’t buy it and don’t read it, but at least be constructive with your criticism and not destruction to SM just because you’re jealous of her success. If she has encouraged non-readers to read her books, then that’s an achievement at least. I too love Christopher Paolini’s books but for some people they are boring, hard to get into, over descriptive and not engaging for young people who will probably just wait for the film rather than read the books.

On a separate note – I admit to having read Edwards version of the story up until page 264, (I will buy it when it comes out, in fact I feel like paying her for the part I’ve read!) and I think it’s brilliant, I especially love Edwards dark humour about what he’d like to do to Mike. I really hope she writes all 4 books from Edwards point of view, I have read them all twice and am now reading them in French, and I also enjoyed the Host.

Good luck to Stephanie Meyers, I will continue to buy her books, she deserves to be rich and famous, as does JK Rowling. The greater variety of books out there the better. I HATE LITERATURE SNOBS – THEY ARE WORSE THAN WINE EXPERTS!!!

  36. Jane says:

A lot of people have said that you “hope” Stephenie ignores the criticism- I
think that’s bull crap. If you actually CARE about Stephenie and her writing ,then you would want her to consider the criticism, learn from it, and BECOME A BETTER WRITER FROM IT.
If she IGNORES it then she won’t grow as a writer and she WONT have a career left.

  37. CorIsMaLy says:

If the book sucked then why did it sell so many copies? I thought it was great. I didn’t like that she got close to Jacob bcuz it didn’t sound so faithful to her love for Edward and Im totally against unfaithfulness but it worked for the story in the end bcuz she chose Edward. I could have done with a bigger sex scene but since it was directed more towards younger kids then I can understand why that was left out. I thought the ending made sense with the volturi, I would have hated to see main characters die in the battle and they would have had to. Having a happy ending in a book is nice because we have enough unhappy dealings in reality. You can all say it sucked but look how many copies sold and how many fans came of it so there are alot of people who disagree with the people who say it sucked :)

  38. Jenn says:

Wow. I was very surprised at all the vehement and angry comments, especially ones that said Stephenie Meyer shouldn’t write because nothing she writes meets the qualifications of genuine literature. I enjoyed reading the Twilight series, flaws and all, because sometimes I like reading escapist books with happy endings. Why does all self-expression have to meet standards of greatness? I’ve read literary criticism that has lambasted the so-called “great” classics, so it seems to me that standards in the literary world are arbitrary and oftentimes upheld by what Julie calls “literature snobs.” If S.M. makes herself happy by writing these novels, and her fan base appreciates them, that’s great. If you don’t like them, don’t read them. Plenty of people become famous for far more ridiculous things than writing fluffy vampire novels (cough, cough Paris Hilton cough, cough).

I know there are many moments in the novels that are unrealistic (even for fantasy) or difficult to comprehend–for me, Jacob’s imprinting on Renesmee (and for that matter, the werewolves’ imprinting on anyone underage) bothered me at first. However, S.M. seemed to find a loophole through the whole pedophilia bit by showing that Jacob was purely Renesmee’s protector, and that he showed no sexual attraction to Renesmee whatsoever. Okay, I could believe that.

Also, Bella and Renesmee’s “perfection” and lack of individual characteristics annoyed me a little. I wish she could have fleshed out her characters more. I noticed as well that Edward took a backseat role in the third part of the novel, and that he didn’t act very fatherly towards Renesmee. I can think of other things that irked me while reading Breaking Dawn, but they didn’t interfere with the overall experience of reading a true page-turner.

i just want 2 say..stephanie meyer..thank you for making twilight..i just finished reading braking dawn..i started the saga in november andi took so long on the last book because when i realized i only had 200 pages 2 go..i got so sad that i had 2 stop 4 like 2 months..i really love these books and everyday i get shivers cuz i wish there was such an edward..and that i would be bella.. i know edwards not real..but i dont think my heart understands that..i think that stephanie meyer did great and i could tell she did the best she could..and i think that she did such an awsome job.. i wish you could write a continuation to braking dawn but i am looking forward 2 midnight sun. .dont let anyone stop you from writing books..if they dont like you..then its their loss..congrats on twilight! loving your books more and more!

  40. Melissa says:

I thought the book was awful. The whole imprinting thing is creepy; it was disgusting in New Moon when they brought it up. All through the book the characters were out of character, heck even the Volturi didn’t act like themselves. Bella became a Mary Sue; Edward became a wimp and Jacob a pedophile. The Twilight series will always be a trilogy for me. After that, thank God for good fan fiction. =)
The one good part was that Edward was able to hear Bella’s mind.

  41. Katrina says:

I do think the “Twilight” saga has lots of mistakes and some things that are good and others bad:

Good things: I think the story was “creative”, not the original one but the development. She must have written like 2000 pages! 2000 pages of a love story between a girl and a vampire is a lot!

The fact that she changed the narrator on “Breaking Dawn” helped to break the monotony.

Bad things: No matter what people say they can never deny that the book lacks depth. Bella doesn’t have any routines appart from studying and hanging out with friends. All she thinks about is Edward. It’s really obsessive and just weird.

Second [and this will contain spoilers] The fact that there is always tension between a conflict between the Volturis and Edward/Bella side is annoying. I was always expecting someone to die, honestly if Bella died the book would have a whole different meaning. But no, there is no fight, in “Breaking Dawn” they spend a long time preparing for a battle and then they solve everything by speaking. It’s annoying.

Third: Bella should be stonger. Women are strong, it’s ok for them to die for love but that’s all Bella complains! When she and Edward break up she goes to meet Jacob and hang out with him! If she was a decent woman she’d shut up swallow it and wait. She’s too feminine. But that’s all due to the lack of depth and symbols.

It’s good for a best-seller but it will be like Harry Potter it will never be mainstream, our kids will never learn it in school.

  42. plaidfroggie says:

Okay poor little Meyers got her feelings hurt by criticism of her book seems to be what this is supposed to be about. Where did Meyers go to school that she never had an English teacher offer constructive criticism? She obviously has made tons of money off of these books, but shows no interest in perfecting her craft.

Her characters are so underdeveloped that if it weren’t for a bunch of horny women and teens they wouldnt’ have sold at all. The love between Bella and Edward explain it to me? He starts off wanting to kill her, runs away from her, and then suddenly they are in love. Please spare me the love at first sight arguement since that is actually lust at first sight on Bella’s part.

Get a good editor Meyers because if you want to continue as a writer you are going to need some help. Unless you can think of more ways to cash in on the horny factor by describing unrealistically handsome guys that can be excused stalking, murderous, abusive behavior you will lose your newfound fame.

Get a thicker skin. At the very least invest some of your money in a few how to write books. Learn some basics of the craft. Spend some time actually developing real characters instead of relying on stereotypes and then see what you come up with.

I Must Say That Twilight Was The Best Book, And It Got Kinda Downhill From There New Moon Was Suckish Until The End, Eclipse Was Pretty Good & Breaking Dawn. Errgghhh. I Loved The Whole Bella & Edward Little Fling But Still Ewww. She Turned Nympho. But The Jacob Imprinting Thing Was Just Sick, Renesmee Was A Baby I Dont Care If It Was Like A Friendship At The Start But Still Eww It Would Have Turned Into Something Pretty Serious Sooon. Must Admit Alot Of The Fan Fiction Story Lines Are Far Better Than The Books Themselves.

  44. CherieLim says:

Ohmy , how i wish there will soon be a book by her continue-ing after this ‘breaking dawn’ . Sure that he book is amazing , but i really hope there is something even more . I stil feel that this ‘last book’ is a cliff hanger . & yes , I really hope that the story will continue into something that is REALLY a happily ever after and I expected it to be better than ‘HarryPotter’ . I hoped that there will be more elabortion on Bella and Renesmee’s speial abilities . And maybe they can fight the volturies together

  45. CherieLim says:

& hey . come on . I’m 15 but it is not considered a hony book . After reading your comments on it , it even hurts me . You are not only critisizing her . Yet , also her readers . I love this book . Its the romance and not the Sex . It didnt have much detail . There are books that are worst . In my country , Singapore , we are so much more matured than what you all think we are . We know what we are doing . We , of course , do not use the word horny .

  46. Mason says:

I’m a 26 year old graduate of Oxford University. I’m highly educated and well read.

I’ll say first off that I thought the Twilight saga was impressive. Few series have compelled me to an immediate reread as this one has. I enjoyed the books a great deal.

I was most impressed by Meyer’s ability to write emotional content with sufficient fervor as to supplant the need for action sequences. I typically favor thriller novels and was surprised to be so entranced by romantic fantasy fiction.

Many of the critics have called Bella a “Mary Sue” character–that is, a character that is idealistic and without flaws. From an adult perspective, that is absolutely ridiculous. Many of her decisions are irresponsible, irregular, or outright contemptable. Keeping in mind her age and experience, I found the flaws remarkably appropriate. At all times I liked Bella, but that did not mean I was always happy with what she did. Her response to separation from Edward in the third book was appropriate, and believable, but it wasn’t the highest calliber response Bella could have had; she was no way ideal. Bella was simply human. Also, Bella’s behavior towards Jacob at the end of the third book (kissing him while engaged to Edward) was poor in the extreme, and in no one’s best interest, but it was consistent with the character. Likewise, her behavior towards Jacob after becoming a vampire, and after discovering his imprint, was surprisingly restrained. After attacking him, she forgave him quickly and did not insist on any kind of separation between him and Renesemee. That wasn’t idealistic; it showed the same kind of childish affection she had towards Jacob previously. Most mothers confronted by a non-family member claiming authority over their newborn would have been violently and consistently repelled.

Anyway, the point is that Bella was quite flawed and quite frustrating. Meyer was consistent in keeping her of the age she was meant to be in terms of her emotional maturity, and did a phenonmenal job creating a romantic world sufficiently entertaining to void any need for baseless action sequences.

The characters grew and developed. The plot kept pace. She gave us a happy ending, which was to be expected and, for most, was desired. You don’t read young adult fiction looking for Hamlet-esque tragedy. When you want sex and death, go elsewhere.

Bravo! Can’t wait to read The Host.

  47. Mason says:

An additional note: I just read a review that claimed it disturbing that Bella gave up her identity to be with her man. I want to respond to this because that sort of review reveals really poor reading. From the outset (that is, from the beginning of Twilight), Meyer communicates Bella as a person that does NOT fit in, at school, in Phoenix, with her Mom and Dad, with friends, really anywhere. She is a person searching for her identity group. She finds it in Edward and Edward’s family. She finds it in being a vampire. They even say of her–it’s like you were born to be a vampire. It’s a story about self-actualization; not a story about self-mutilation.

I wonder sometimes at the intelligence of our adult, parent, readers. If the story doesn’t communicate certain presubscribed values, it’s clearly bad writing and a bad influence. Thanks for confirming my lack of trust in our society’s parents and our society’s educators.

    Open your eyes.

  48. Daniel says:

To be honest, i read the book and i regret for reading that shit.

I mean, Jacob is a fucking pedophile

Steph, thats fucking messed up, how come a wolf would do that to a baby?! The whole thing of Bella pregnancy take more of the half the book and the story lost some of impact when Bella became inmortal and that suck! The good of a book like this is when the character risk his life or something.

Some people said that Bella dont have a personality, to me, she is the classic depressing-i wanna die-loser girl who wants a fucking blue prince

Jacob is a pedophile, yes, i said it again

  49. Yams♥ says:

It was okay. She was running out of time. But if she had more time I think she could of done something different.

  50. kirraleadatsme says:

I love Breaking Dawn. Not because I thought it was a good book (oh God no, it was absolute shit!) but because it made so many Twilight fans pissed and made them realise that perhas, just perhaps, the REST of the series of shit too.

I’m not going to return my copy of Breaking Dawn, for what it lacks in, well, just about everything it makes up for in mindless entertainment. I love reading about Nessie’s birth, it brings tear to my eyes, it’s that funny! And anyone who’s seen the movie Alien will agree with me.
